Stink Bugs
The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, is an invasive shield-shaped insect that spends summer feeding on fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals, then marches indoors by the dozens when fall cools down. Like boxelder bugs, they overwinter inside wall voids and attics without feeding or reproducing, then wake up confused on warm winter days and blunder into living rooms. Their signature defense is the smell: disturb or crush one and it releases a pungent, cilantro-like odor that lingers on skin and fabric. They do not bite people or damage structures, but they stain curtains and walls, and a house that hosted them one winter will host them again the next unless entry points get sealed. Because they aggregate on sun-warmed walls before pushing inside, the treatment window is late summer through early fall, aimed at the exterior before the migration, not at the ones already sleeping in your walls.
